The National Weather Service in Wilmington and Pender County Emergency Management are closely monitoring Tropical Storm Chantal, which is expected to approach the South Carolina coastline late tonight. A Tropical Storm Warning is in effect for portions of southeast North Carolina, including Surf City and Hampstead, indicating that tropical-storm-force winds are likely within the next 36 hours.
While the center of Chantal is expected to remain offshore, the storm will bring several hazards to our area beginning this evening and continuing into Sunday.
Expected Impacts for Pender County:
Tropical Storm-Force Winds
- Winds may reach tropical storm strength along the coast, particularly in Surf City and Hampstead.
- Gusty winds may lead to downed trees, scattered power outages, and hazardous driving conditions overnight into Sunday.
Storm Surge and Coastal Flooding
- A localized storm surge of 1 to 3 feet above ground level is possible, especially in surge-prone areas.
- The window of concern is through this evening. Flooding of low-lying roads and coastal property is likely.
- This surge threat has increased compared to earlier forecasts. Residents should shelter away from surge-prone areas and follow instructions from local officials.
Pender County Emergency Management will continue coordinating with the National Weather Service in Wilmington and will share updates as conditions evolve.
