Pender County Urges Residents to Prepare as Hurricane Season Begins

Home Posted on May 30, 2025

Hurricane season is here, and Pender County Emergency Management reminds all residents that early preparation is essential. While seasonal forecasts may vary, it only takes one storm to cause major impacts to our communities.

Pender County has experienced firsthand the destructive force of hurricanes, whether large or small. High winds, heavy rainfall, tornadoes, and flooding can occur even in lower-category storms. Now is the time to get informed, make a plan, and gather supplies.

Stay informed before, during, and after a storm:

Get Prepared

  • Being ready before a storm arrives can save lives.
  • Create or update your family’s evacuation and communication plans.
  • Build a disaster supply kit with essential items.
  • Review your flood insurance coverage. Remember, standard homeowner's insurance does not cover flood damage. Flood insurance is available through the National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP), but there is typically a 30-day waiting period for new policies.

Suggested Emergency Kit Items

  • Bottled water and non-perishable food
  • Flashlight, batteries, or a hand-crank radio
  • Medications, first aid kit, and personal hygiene supplies
  • Copies of important documents, extra cash, and phone chargers
  • Blankets, maps, and manual can openers
  • Items for infants, children, pets, or those with special needs

“No matter the prediction numbers for the season, it only takes one to be a bad year,” said Tommy Batson, Pender County Emergency Management Director
